ASTM Changing Tables Group Looks at Folding Steps

Most discussion during a March 14 session by an ASTM F15.18 task group dealt with exemptions related to entrapment testing and folding steps. Involved was the corresponding language in various sections of F2388, Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Baby Changing Tables for Domestic Use. The goal is to get the revision ready for balloting at the full F15 meeting in April.

Involved are many concepts. The steps must require action by an adult caregiver to unfold. They must fold back automatically when released. When that occurs, they must latch automatically and be inaccessible. The latching can involve double-action latching release mechanism or single-action latching or locking devices.

The panel is using the double-action definition from the F404 high chair standard. The steps are for use by older children. The purpose is to ease strain on caregivers from lifting these heavier children, but exposed stairs can risk entrapment (PSL, 12/15/14).
