Commission to Review Updates to Garage Door Requirements

CPSC members are slated to vote by January 18 on updating rules on garage door openers based on UL changes. The agency's rules at 16 CFR 1211 are linked to UL 325, Standard for Safety for Door, Drapery, Gate Louver and Window Operators and Systems.

Each time UL amends the rules, the commission must vote to adopt the changes. The process typically occurs will no debate or question. UL made three changes to the sixth edition of UL 325, but CPSC staff deemed one of them to be outside the scope of the mandatory rule as they involve drapery operators. The other two address:

  • Protective Circuits and Controls: There would be an alternative evaluation method involving UL 60335-1, Standard for Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, Part 1: General Requirements.
  •

  • Unintended Operation: These amendments cover remote monitoring and wireless/internet activation. Issues include standalone vs integral devices, visible and audible alarms, and instructions and markings.
