ANEC and BEUC Give Product Safety Demands

Two EU consumer groups are urging that updates to the European product safety system include four elements. ANEC and BEUC jointly recommended (bit.ly/2Co8Y25):

  • "Expand stricter surveillance to goods sold online."
  •

  • "Set up a pan-European accident and injury database."
  •

  • "Guarantee involvement of consumer groups in the future European network for market surveillance (Union Product Compliance Board), for more transparency about the results of Member States market surveillance activities."
  •

  • "Take…the CE marking off the products’ packaging. The logo misleads consumers who believe it is a safety seal. It should only appear on the technical documentation where it will be accessible to the market surveillance authorities."

In late December (PSL, 1/1/18), the European Commission issued a proposal to revive the update attempt. It focused on surveillance, commission support, information sharing, other communication, and transparency.
