CPSC & Other U.S. Briefs

Sleep Deaths: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention January 9 reported that roughly 3,500 infants die due to SIDS and similar causes. Despite declines since the 1990s, CDC voiced concern about some findings about maternal behaviors: 21.6% said they place babies to sleep on sides and back; 61.4% report bed sharing; and 38.5% use soft bedding. The Vital Signs report (bit.ly/2CYR1dX) also noted race and age differences. For example, soft bedding was most prevalent among Asian/Pacific Island respondents (55%), closely followed by Hispanics (53%). Youngest mothers ranked worst for all behaviors.

Carbon Monoxide: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention January 6 circulated tips (bit.ly/2DhKEjR) on avoiding poisoning that included detector installation, equipment maintenance, and misuse of products like ovens or generators.

Makeup: U.S. PIRG called (bit.ly/2AOaB7y) for greater oversight following allegations of asbestos in children's products sold by Claire's. The company has raised doubts about the claims, citing 3rd-party testing (PSL, 1/8/18). Cosmetics fall under FDA jurisdiction.
