ECHA Wants Comments on Microplastics

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) through May 11 will be seeking input on microplastics. The agency also will hold a 90-minute webinar (bit.ly/2FgthUx) on its concerns March 12. As for the consultation, the agency has posted an online feedback form at bit.ly/2FYZsoR). Topics include:

  • The definition of intentionally added microplastics that risk human health or the environment.
  • Uses of microplastics and products that contain them.
  • Technical functions of microplastics.
  • Information on alternatives.
  • Effects and cost/benefits of restrictions.
  • Detection and characterization methods.

In January (PSL, 1/29/18), ECHA signaled it would look at the matter. It is not looking at release of microplastics via processes like degeneration. The move is part of a larger plastics strategy.
