California Seeks Feedback on Priority Work Plan

Comment by March 19 on the draft 2021-2023 product work plan from the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. The plan (bit.ly/3a7JaKP) is for the state's Safer Consumer Products Program. Three highlights include:

  • Children's products might be added to priority targets, and the agency is looking at aligning with Washington State's definition of the category – intent for use by those under 12 and including toys, children's cosmetics, children's jewelry, car safety seats, and the broad category of aids for sucking/teething/sleep/relaxation/feeding.
  •

  • Furnishing/décor is unlikely to get much attention beyond already ongoing work such as on PFAS in carpets and rugs (PSL, 3/16/20).
  •

  • Food contact material and packaging is a carryover from the 2018-2020 plan, and work will continue on issues like PFAS (PSL, 8/24/20), BPA, ortho-phthalates, and more.

Other product categories in the draft plan include beauty/ personal care/hygiene, cleaning products, building/construction products/material, office/school/business supplies, and motor vehicle tires.
