CPSC & Other U.S. Briefs

Carpets: The Environmental Protection Agency September 30 released a draft final rule that it said would restrict imports of perfluorinated chemicals. Companies would need to report all new uses in both domestically made and imported products. The agency said that the chemicals – often used for soil and stain resistance – are deemed to be environmentally persistent and bioaccumulative. See the draft at www.epa.gov/oppt/existingchemicals/pubs/PrePublication_LCPFAC_Carpet_SNUR_Final_2013-09-30.pdf.

Fire Sprinklers: The mean cost of installation per square foot fell since 2008 from $1.61 to $1.35, the National Fire Protection Association reported October 1. It looked at 51 homes in 17 areas with selections based on geography, regulations, housing types, systems and materials, and water situation. The rage of 2013 costs was 81¢ to $2.47; the median was $1.22. See more at www.nfpa.org/sprinklercost.
