Western Australia Fines Hoverboard Sellers

The Western Australia Department of Commerce March 11 said its EnergySafety office issued fines involving hoverboards. Although the agency neither specified the amounts nor named the parties, it said seven individual traders and two companies were involved.

At issue was use of battery chargers that lack approval under Australian requirements. That fault has been the primary mechanism for obtaining recalls in that nation. As of this article there had been 10. See bit.ly/256sKsl.

In Australia, state agencies share product safety duties with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. This announcement noted that the states and national agency are assessing incident reports. It urged consumers to take care with the products and to seek refunds if they have doubts about safety.
