CPSC & Other U.S. Briefs

Pool Drains: Commissioners are slated to vote by March 22 on a CPSC staff recommendation to deny a petition (PSL, 8/3/15) to declare vacuum diffusion technology an anti-entrapment device under the VGB pool law. Staff evaluation ( 1.usa.gov/256jNPY) deemed it to insufficiently mitigate against body entrapment, mechanical entrapment, and evisceration but might aid against hair and limb entrapment.

Engine-Driven Tools: Background memos on CPSC's most-recent report on deaths associated with carbon monoxide (PSL, 10/19/15), with details of many, are at 1.usa.gov/1MazQpq.

Fire Education: The U.S. Fire Administration March 23 will hold a webinar on hard-to-reach audiences. Learn more at bit.ly/1Xxw0HD.

Indoor Air: The California Air Resources Board March 24 will webcast a seminar on reducing in-home exposure to air pollution. See bit.ly/21wNFjJ.

Bicycles: There were 726 U.S. traffic deaths in 2014, a slight decline from 749 a year before, according to data made available in March by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Injuries estimates increased slightly from about 48,000 to some 50,000. Pedestrian deaths rose 4,779 to 4,884, and injuries dipped 66,000 to 65,000. Find the report 1.usa.gov/1R0S6AH.

Hoverboards: A general exclusion order in the March 16 Federal Register by the International Trade Commission affects the products, barring entry of items linked to an investigation of violations of Segway patents.
