About 27K Seniors Died Due to Falls in 2014, Finds CDC

Some 27,000 seniors age 65 or older died due to falls in 2014, according to a September 23 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, 2.8 million visited emergency rooms with about 800,000 of them also being hospitalized.

Overall, 28.7% of seniors reported at least one fall in the preceding year. This translates to about 29.0 million falls. Additionally, 37.5% said a fall needed medical treatment or restricted activity for at least one day. That means 7 million injuries. Women were more likely than men to report falls. Incidents increased with age. The agency also looked at trends by race/ethnicity, marital status, education, income, and health. See bit.ly/2dcYbOy.
