Canada Wants Input on Lead in Mouthed Items

Health Canada said it will be asking for input on amending the accessible lead requirements for children's products that can be mouthed. This will occur in the next few months and will last 75 days once a forthcoming notice in the Canada Gazette is published. The limit would be 90 mg/kg.

Affected would be products intended for play or learning by children ages 3 to 13 years, childcare articles, and clothing and accessories for children under 14 years. The agency has been considering these changes since at least 2011, with the most recent public consultation in 2014 (PSL¸ 8/18/14).

The new work is part of the "Forward Regulatory Plan 2016-2018." Background information on the upcoming lead project is at bit.ly/2dJBBux. Once available, details presumably also will be posted on the agency's consultation page, which is at bit.ly/2dssxN0.
