Briefs and Charts

Helmets: CPSC September 9 urged parental feedback on helmets worn when children were hurt playing football, hockey or lacrosse. See bit.ly/2kHGNaM.

Bouncers: CPSC's direct final rule updating its Section 104 rule is in the September 6 Federal Register (bit.ly/2lMjf4K). It is effective Dec. 14 (PSL, 9/9/19).

E-Cigarettes: Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) September 11 tweeted (bit.ly/2lJhS6R), "CPSC must also join this fight." He was referring to the recent attention to the products and word of a possible ban of flavored liquids. CPSC's jurisdiction covers child-resistant closures and possibly issues like batteries.

Australia: Consumer group CHOICE September 11 called for updates to the nation's product safety laws. It pointed to high failure rates of cribs, portable cribs, and strollers subjected to its testing (bit.ly/2lNHbEO). It also noted worries about button batteries It made similar demands earlier this year (PSL, 2/25/19), saying there should be a prohibition on selling unsafe products based on regulations in the United Kingdom.

Third-Party Testing: Comment by November 5 on CPSC's request to OMB for renewal of information collection authority under the Paperwork Reduction Act. See the September 6 Federal Register (bit.ly/2m97BRv).

Car Seats: The Auto Alliance September 4 announced a voluntary commitment by automakers to produce vehicles with rear seat reminder systems by 2025 models (bit.ly/2kK6EPp). It won praise from both Democratic (bit.ly/2lLEROM) and Republican (bit.ly/2keCRxX) legislators although the former expressed some concern about the voluntary nature and the latter pointed to the similarity to a bill (S. 1601) with bipartisan sponsorship. Meanwhile, NHTSA reported (bit.ly/2HM7bZO) that it knew of 40 hot car deaths of children in 2019 as of September 9, compared to 53 in all of 2018.
