Briefs and Charts

Safety Data Sheets: Comment by October 10 on a draft EC regulation to align rules on safety data sheets with UN model regulations. The proposal (bit.ly/2mniRdk) also would make some clarifications about information released by poison control centers. The data sheet element involves REACH, and the changes mainly would affect the identifications of substances, mixtures, and articles. These involve UN recommendations on issues like identification numbers, shipping names, transportation classes, packing groups, environmental hazards, user protections, and bulk transport.

Age Grading: A September 16 EC guidance gives advice on age-grading puffer ball toys and similar products like yo-yo balls. The document (bit.ly/2mgi11M) addresses two age issues: intent for use in play by youth under 14 years old and intent for use by children under 36 months old. A crucial distinction involves items that look like animals or similar figures. The guide explains that because caregivers could confuse these with other soft-filled toys, they need to comply with under-36-month mandates. Meanwhile, yo-yo balls' long cords make them inappropriate for that age.

Washington State: Chemical reporting data under the Children's Safe Products Act will stop being available on the state-run website September 30, the Department of Ecology said. Rather, it will be on the Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse. The URL is theic2.org. Companies will need to submit data there too, likely starting in November.

E-Cigarettes: CDC September 16 activated its Emergency Operations Center to coordinate interagency investigation into deaths linked to use and marked by lung symptoms. It also has set up an information page for posting updates: bit.ly/2m2VDsz.

Electronics: December 6 is the comment deadline on the EC fitness check of RoHS (PSL, 9/2/19). See bit.ly/2QkN4TU.

Whirlpool: More than 63,200 have inquired about remedies for dryers with fire risks, the U.K. Office for Product Safety and Standards said (bit.ly/2movNQ8) September 16. More than 32,500 got resolution – exchanges took an average of 8.7 days, refunds 7.6, and modifications 6.8.

Chemicals: A September 6 guide from OECD on assessing children's product-related exposures is at bit.ly/2kEbWMp.
