Briefs and Charts
Chemicals: Timely and regular assessment for toxicity were among numerous still-open recommendations to EPA, according to an April 28 memo from the Government Accountability Office (bit.ly/3dnsCNR). Some GAO advice dates back to 2008, 2011, and 2013. Also involved are 2018 input stemming from the 2016 Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Counterfeits: With product safety and health risks cited as among the concerns, the U.S. Trade Representative office April 29 updated its report on notorious markets for counterfeiting and piracy (bit.ly/3dobM1g). It includes listing of both online marketplaces and physical locations in various foreign nations. The former now includes some foreign Amazon domains but not its main U.S site. Additional details are at bit.ly/2YIBkC1. TVs: U.S. Customs and Border Protection May 6 reported (bit.ly/2A9hJ3T) the seizure in International Falls, Minn. of 440 units violating intellectual property rights. The value was about $175,560. As always with such actions, CBP pointed to safety risks from fakes as well as to its overview of various other harms caused (bit.ly/2zlipT8) such as support of criminal enterprises and lost revenues for owners. Sanitizers: Health Canada's May 5 tips to consumers –reading labels, checking if claims are approved (it gives a related link), and steps for poisoning – are at bit.ly/2WCCfS4. It also gives information on products for hands, hard surfaces and general household cleaning/bleach.
