Canada Got 572 Product Reports in Q1-2020

Health Canada received 572 product reports in the first quarter of calendar 2020, according to its data made available May 7. About 37% (214) included deaths or injuries with the top injury types being irritations (53), burns (38) and cuts (37). Industry sent 59%, and consumers sent 41%.

 

Most involved items covered under the CCPSA, but some (38) were cosmetics, which was the top product type. After that came electric ranges/ovens (33), telephones/accessories (26), thermostats (21), and laundry soap/detergents (15).

 

Percentages by product categories were appliances (25%), housewares (21%), children's products (16%), electronics (12%), grooming products/accessories (9%), home/automobile maintenance (7%), clothing/textiles/accessories (4%), outdoor living (4%), and sports/recreation/hobby (2%).

Last month (PSL, 4/13/20), Health Canada reported that ten product classes accounted for 33% of the 2,504 product reports it received during all of 2019.

 

The breakdown of the categories were toys (183 reports | 119 from industry), electric ranges/ovens (141 | 91), telephones/accessories (79 | 62), power saws (76 | 76), diapers (67 | 64), portable electric heaters (52 | 40), vaping devices (50 | 7), thermostats (47 | 17), riding mowers/garden tractors (42 | 42), and computers (39 | 26).
