Briefs & Charts

Child Strength: February 18 is the deadline for the new round of comments on CPSC's likely study. Revisions addressed input from earlier (PSL, 1/18/21). The Federal Register notice is at bit,ly/35WJDx5.

Infant Swings: April 3 is the effective date for CPSC's direct final rule updating its Section 104 regulations (PSL, 12/21/20). That timeline will pause if CPSC gets significant negative input by February18. The Federal Register notice is at bit,ly/3p0VVMl.

Regulatory Review: President Joe Biden January 20 issued an executive order for OMB – with input from regulatory agencies – to look into modernizing the regulatory review process, including targets of better "efficiency, transparency, and inclusiveness." It gives no deadlines beyond "as soon as practicable." Read it at bit,ly/3qKBMe3.

Deregulation: President Joe Biden is expected in the coming weeks to reverse all or parts of two executive orders issued January 18, two days before his inauguration. One aimed to minimize career staff doing rulemaking activity meant for appointed officials (bit,ly/2Y4rWXP), and the other (bit,ly/2NobqQA) set steps and reviews for criminal provisions in regulations.

Regulations: President Joe Biden January 20 issued an executive order (bit,ly/3sNlfYD) revoking numerous executive orders issued between 2017 and 2019, including on regulatory reform and administrative adjudication.

Rulemaking Freeze: The White House January 20 sent a pro forma memo to agencies for pauses and possible additional public input for in-the-works rule changes (bit,ly/3p9ZEXZ). It acknowledges that some actions might be exempt for safety and similar considerations.
