Tipovers Averaged about 25,500 in 2017-2019 but Fell Sharply from 2010

There was an estimated annual average for 2017-2019 of 25,500 emergency room visits involving tipover incidents, according to data made available by CPSC January 27. This compares to a rough annual average above 41,500 for 2010-2012. CPSC wrote (bit.ly/3r0wJWR):

"For 2010 through 2019, there is a statistically significant linear decline in television-only, in television-related (television-Only; and television and furniture), and in overall tip-over ED-treated tip-over injuries including all ages. The decline…in large part, is due to the decline in tip overs involving televisions during those years. No linear trend was detected for the entire period 2010 through 2019, for only-furniture."

These observations referred to 2010-2019 drops of 45,000 to 22,400 for all incidents, of 20,000 to 3,900 for all TV-related events, and of 23,300 to 17,700 for furniture only.

Breakouts of the 2017-2019 annual averages included:

  • Products: Furniture (alone or with TVs or appliances) was associated with 78% of incidents (19,900), TVs alone with 18% (4,600), and appliances alone with 4% (1,100).
  •

  • Ages: Children and youth under 18 years accounted for 44% (11,300), those 18-59 with 39% (10,000), and those 60 or older with 17% (4,200).
  •

  • Furniture plus Youth: Furniture (alone or with TVs or appliances) was involved in about 8,800 of the incidents among youth under 18 years. These included 40% (3,500) with tables, 30% (2,600) with chests/bureaus/dressers, 17% (1,500) with shelving/bookcases, and 13% (1,100) for all other furniture including cabinets and stands.

Death data in the report was for 571 known incidents from 2000 to 2019. Two highlights included:

  • Products: TVs alone accounted for 32% (180), furniture alone for 31% (177), furniture plus TVs for 30% (174), and appliances alone (mostly stoves/stoves) for 7% (40).
  •

  • Ages: Youth under 18 accounted for 82% (469), ages 18-59 for 4% (20), and 60+ for 14% (82).
